I Finished Them!

(imagine a relatively childish sing-song voice now) I finished them, I finished them! I finished them, I finished them! Finally- all seven of them! Thassaright bunnies- ALL SEVEN OF THEM!

This is the official Dark Tower site and it’s pretty damn good- whether you’re a King fan or not!

The Dark Tower 1: The Gunslinger (1982)

The Dark Tower 2: The Drawing of the Three (1987)

The Dark Tower 3: The Waste Lands (1991)

The Dark Tower 4: Wizard and Glass (1997)

The Dark Tower 5: Wolves of the Calla (2003)

The Dark Tower 6: Song of Susannah (2004)

The Dark Tower 7: The Dark Tower (2004)

I read the first three books in 1998 or so, when a boyfriend introduced me to one Roland Deschain and got me started on my own journey to the Dark Tower. I was already a Steven King fan, but had only read a few of his books (Tommyknockers, Gerald’s Game and Needful Things). I read the first three Dark Tower books in quick succession, reading the fourth one much later, and then I couldn’t wait for the sequels- but Steven made his constant readers (as he himself refers to his fans) wait and wait and wait some more? when the last three books in the series were finally published I couldn’t wait to read them, and decided to re-read the first ones since it had been a while.

I started buying the series around the middle of last year in preparation for my sick leave after my hernia operation, and managed to get my hands on books one through three and book six. All the books are available from the usual places and Exclusive Books of course, which is mine and Damien’s favourite book shop- and I actually had to buy two of them online because I couldn’t find them in the shops! After I started working again I bought book four and about a month later I bought book seven? but I was still short of book five! Of course, by the time I had read one through four? I needed to get number five and couldn’t find it in the shops- and I didn’t have money to go online shopping! And then- wonder of wonders- a friend gave it to me for my birthday having asked me which one I needed and ordering it online! Am I spoilt or what!?! From about mid January I read books five, six and seven in quick succession (and having no laptop at home to surf till the wee hours helped, LOL).

I tell you, the ever ingenious Mr King must be a wizard!! After all these years he STILL manages to surprise me on a regular basis! At the beginning of the last chapter in book seven, Mr King started by saying the constant reader may be disappointed should they continue? and if that’s not a mind f#ck, then I dunno what is! How could I not continue!!??! Am I right?!?

Needless to say I, continued and read the book to the end? and if I didn’t love books as much as I do (and I didn’t want to scare Grampa Scratchy who was asleep at my feet) I woulda thrown the nearly 700 page paperback across the room when I got to the last line! Un-bloody-believable! It cleared up a few things from the story for me, but at the same time, I was incredulous and the hell in!

Shit?

I loved them anyway- I’m a sucker that way?!

And just watch, in a few years- I’ll read them all again.
