Burger Cupcakes!

Today, I attempted to bake cupcakes that look like little burgers for my nephew Nathan’s 5th birthday party.

I found- or maybe someone emailed to me- step by step instructions on the internet, and since I couldn’t come up with a way to do “BOKKE!” themed cupcakes, I decided on the little burgers.

New cupcakes ideas never look like I want them to look on the first attempt…

First I baked plan vanilla cupcakes with sesame seeds on top to represent the burger bun, and then I baked chocolate cupcakes that were to become the “burger patty”. Unfortunately I bumped one of the switches on the oven and burnt the tops of the chocolate ones- rendering them unusable for the patties…
Anyhoodle.
While they cooled, I made a white butter icing and then I thinly sliced some green glace cherries to represent pickles.
Then I cut the vanilla ones in half, and cut the bottoms off the chocolate ones. Using a blob of strawberry jam, I stuck the bottoms of the chocolate ones to the bottoms of the vanilla ones.
Then I divided the finished white icing in half, and coloured one lot with yellow and one lot with red… though I have yet to master the art of red icing! I always get a pinkish colour… 🙁
Thanx to tips in my baking books, I have found the easiest way to fill a piping bag is to put it into a tall glass, folding the edges over the cup, and then spoon the icing into the bag. Then you just twist it shut and squeeze!
I then piped yellow icing onto one half of the chocolate part of the cupcake, topped it with a few “pickle slices” (the cherries), and then piped on the “red” icing, after filling the piping bag the same way.
Then I topped it with the other half of the vanilla cupcakes.
I think they look a little like burgers…

  1. Those are awesome!! A tip with red icing..dont use that Moirs colouring! Use the powder or the gel – I use the Holiday Red. I’ll post a pic of the Manchester United cake I did – red red red.

  2. Acidicice said I should check your cup cakes out and she was right they really look great. I bet the kids were over the moon with them :O)

  3. Wow! Awesome! I used to bake meringues at a stage and wanted to bake green and red ones for Christmas. I went to a speciality baking store and they have a special powder to colour white mixture with so it doesn’t come out pink! Perhaps you’ll find something simliar there in JHB?

  4. The very first cake I made was for Cams 1st bday – it was a Winnie the Pooh cake so I needed red! I swear I used 10 packets of icing and 2 bottles of colouring and still Poohs shirt remained pink *sigh*

But these cupcakes came out perfectly 🙂

  5. Those are brilliant! I don’t know about over there, but here little mini burgers or also known as “sliders” are a big hit. We even served them at our golf outing as an appetizer. Had them butler servered so they were always fresh and hot. (A server would walk around with a tray of them offering to the guest, once tray was empty return to kitchen for a refil.) They were a big hit. I bet the cupcakes would be as well. Good luck with those…not that you need any with your beautiful cup cake art!

After the wedding, you should consider opening up an Etsy.com site. I didn’t realize it, but they do have a secion for edibles. I bet you woul make a fortune there.

Bravo my dear, bravo…you are the cup cake queen! Now if only you live on the same continent as I did. 🙂
