On Sunday September 16th, I attended my first Comic Con – the first ever Comic Con in Africa!
I have waited YEARS for Comic Con to come to SA, and as soon as I saw the announcements my Glugster and I were determined to go. Hubby doesn’t mind dressing up, but its me who wants to CosPlay, and its so easy with Terry Pratchett’s Nanny Ogg as my alter ego!! So hubby came along in civvies and carried all our stuff, while I hung onto my hat! 😛
As soon as we could we booked our tickets for the Sunday (Saturday was already sold out
), and I started checking on my costume. I tried to make my boots more red, made sure I had the right spray to make my hair white, and got my mom to make me a cape (the last one I used was rented
In the weeks ahead of Comic Con I asked a couple of friends to play Granny Weatherwax and Magrat Garlick to my Nanny Ogg, and we went as Terry Pratchett’s Wyrd Sisters! It was SO much fun, and we were recognised a lot more often than I thought we would be – with people taking pictures with us and of us!

Once we got home, I realised I hadn’t taken NEARLY enough pictures of the day, and some of the incredible costumes I saw, and we hadn’t seen everything there was to see! I started thinking about how we can make sure we miss nothing next time, and that is how this blog post came about.
So. What will I do differently next year?
- First – shoes!
I will make sure that both my Glugster and I are wearing super-comfy shoes (mine were no problem, his weren’t fabulous) because there’s a LOT of walking and standing at Comic Con!
- Second – we will start saving money WELL in advance!*
Food and drink at expos is notoriously pricey (as in R20 for a can of Coke) and you can’t spend the day there and NOT eat, but you need money for all the cool stuff thats on offer! The original artworks and paintings and jewellery were SO “must-have”, and if you are a collector there are comics and games and all kinds of things you may be battling to find in actual shops.
- Third – we will have a “schedule”!
Our plan is to first check the list of talks and workshops happening and what time they are taking place so we can be sure to be in the right place at the right time. Then we will do a tour of ALL the stalls and displays and have a good look at everything on offer and on show. Then we’ll break for food, and THEN we will walk around checking out everyone’s costumes and taking pictures of, and with them!
If you went to Comic Con Africa this year, did you get a VIP ticket? Is it worth the expense?
*There is NO way I will ever fork out several hundred rands for a photo with a celebrity, unless I win the lottery!
Our guide-dog-puppy-in-training Lennox and I were invited by HP and NuMetro at Montecasino to watch Turbo on the big screen in 3D!
Anyone who knows me knows how I LOVE a 3D movie! I love how it looks like the images on the screen are close enough to touch, and I twitch and duck as things coming flying at me during the movie. My Glugster and my knucklehead love to watch me watch a 3D movie and laugh at me as I reach for things and jump in my seat!
There was a brief presentation from HP on their printers and workstations, and I was very impressed to find out that Dreamworks – the creators of many of my favourite movies like Shrek, Madagascar, How to Train Your Dragon, Megamind, El Dorado, Over The Hedge and Kung Fu Panda – is HP powered!
And I’ve only ever used HP laptops myself and both of the printers I have at home are HP.
Lennox was as good as gold and everyone was very happy to see him! we even had our picture taken with a giant Turbo!
I had made sure it would be okay to take him with me, as is the SAGA puppy walking protocol. He didn’t make a sound and we headed outside every hour or so to ensure he didn’t have an “accident” inside the movie theatre.
When the movie started, I thought the noise might be an issue to start with, but he went to sleep for about an hour! When he woke up he was a bit fidgety, and there was loads of popcorn on the floor to tempt him, but I gave him a hoof to chew on and he settled down again.
I LOVED the movie! It was funny, the voice cast was phenomenal, the animation was awesome, and even though the story line sounds ludicrous its allowed ‘coz its an animated movie!
~~as per my Ladybloggers pledge, I must state here that whilst I was gifted the movie tickets, I was not paid to write this blog post, and all opinions contained herein are mine and mine alone~~
Please have a seat and make yourself comfortable!
Grab a cup of tea or coffee, or a glass of wine if you’d prefer that!
What do you think of the new place?
Its all still me, just jazzed up a little!
I think I like it. I may still play with the layout a bit and fiddle with the colours, but I like it.
After seven and a half years of blogging as Angel’s Mind (a blog title I have never liked, by the way) which resulted in 2015 blog posts and 15,380 comments, I decided to recreate myself! I’ve actually been thinking about it for aaaages but I was a little afraid of the change, and then I decided to grab the blog by the veritable horns and throw caution to the wind.
All of my old blog posts are here, and I will eventually board up my old home completely and stash it so its just history for me, but for now it will stay as is.
I hope you all will be happy visiting me here!
In case you were wondering – THIS is how you are supposed to watch a movie! Leather recliners, loads of space between movie goers so you can’t hear the people next to you chewing or talking, divine dinner platters and wine, with popcorn, M&Ms and Coke for afters!
Okay we didn’t have platters or wine… but you SO can if you go to Ster Kinekor’s Cine Prestige at The Zone at Rosebank! My Glugster and I will totally be doing our date nights there from now on! We shared a huge loveseat with no armrest in the middle, each with our own seperate side TABLE! The cost of the ticket and the cost of the platters per person makes it a perfectly reasonable night out, IMHO!
So how did we get to experience it for the first time? Well, remember when I told you how I had been invited by MTN to see The Dark Knight Rises on the big screen? Tuesday night was the night! I am so very glad I decided to put some make up on and dress up a wee bit for our night at the movies! When we arrived we were interviewed briefly on camera, and then we had fun with a photo booth of sorts where we could don props from the movie characters!
The movie was simply AWWWWSUUUUM! There’s no denying that I am a huge fan of movies adapted from comic book stories and I have seen all the Batman movies several times. The newest one had a portrayal of Catwoman that I rather liked in that she wasn’t some crazy lady pretending to be a cat, and there was a glorious twist towards the end of the movie! I also liked the way they managed to seamlessly follow on from the last Batman movie without having to spend half the movie on flashbacks. Action, a laugh or two, intrigue, cool cars and gadgets- it wouldn’t be a Batman movie without all those things! Go and see it! You will not be sorry!
Ooh and here is a look at the theatre!
This is the love seat, with tables on either side and no armrest. They have double seats like this that have an armrest and a side table in the middle, and there are single seats with their own side tables as well. To the left there you can see how much space there is between the seats as well so you and the other patrons are FAAAAR apart!
And the theatre is a small one, it only holds 50 people!
Thank you MTN! I loved the theatre and I loved the movie!
Thank goodness I had make up on!
Okay. So whilst my knucklehead may not agree with me if I claim to be a geek, I believe I am one… Gadgets have me doing my best Gollum impression, surfing the web is a necessity, and movies based on comic books are the AW-SUUUUM (use a sing-song voice for that part)!
I had a visit from a tuxedo’d courier- replete with white gloves- bearing a beribboned black box on a silver tray! And I said I was glad I had make up on because he was followed by a photographer! I had two crazy-excited Labrador puppies on leashes and my two older dogs were bouncing all over the place, and this guy in his white waistcoat maintained his dignity without flinching!
So what was inside the box, I hear you ask!?
Well, there was a personalised invitation to me and my “superhero husband” (with an instruction to find a sitter for our guide-dog puppies) to go and see The Dark Knight Rises at the uber snazzy Cine Prestige! To say I was squealing with delight is an understatement, and I know my superhero husband would have been far more effusive had he not had an office full of people able to hear his end of the conversation when I called him to tell him!
Also in the box was a bobble-head Batman! I’ve never had a bobble-head doll and now I have the coolest one ever! And naturally when my darling Glugster and my knucklehead got home from work we argued over who it would belong to!
I have decided its mine.
I’ll tell you all about the movie and Ster Kinekor’s Cine Prestige next week!
