Car Shopping.

I am looking for a new car.

I’ve Googled up a storm, gotten excited and been disappointed and I haven’t even started test driving anything yet!

I want to buy a new car- out of the box, or off the floor so to speak- so I am going to have to fork over some dough when I make my decision…

And yes, I know rental cars are often sold relatively cheap and in good nick, as are demo models, and you can find a good deal at an auction- but that’s not the point. I drove second-hand rattletraps that left me standing and frustrated on several occasions before I bought my brand new Aquamarine Opel Corsa 1.6iS almost 10 years ago. But that was because I could only afford second-hand lemons. And since I bought my Corsa I haven’t had a day’s grief! I’ve had to make standard replacements that come with age- but it’s never left me standing!

And now I want to buy another new car.

I would love another Opel- but these people have ridiculously overpriced themselves and I find it immensely annoying.

So I have been looking around and here are some of the ones I’ve found.

Isn’t it amazing how similar so many of these are? I know a lot of them are built in the same factory, and they have the same engines and bodies- just with different badges on… but one of the reasons I loved my Corsa so much when I bought it was because it didn’t look like anything else on the road!

Anyhoodle.
I’m still looking.
I dunno what I’m going to buy… The Seat Leon and the Subaru Impreza have caught my eye of late- but Seat has now pulled out of the country and Subaru is expensive. The VW Polo and the Golf fit the bill- though I loathe them… so we’ll see yet. Citroen, Peugeot and Renault are French imports and thus are out of the question for me.
So how many have I found? Well, here is a list of 5-door cars available in South Africa… these are of all different sizes and all costs- and I just listed them because I was stunned by how many there are- and this isn’t even all of them!
Alfa 145
Alfa 147
Alfa Brera
Alfa Mito
Audi A3
Chery QQ3
Chery Tiggo
Chevrolet Aveo
Chevrolet Spark
Citroen C3
Daihatsu Sirion
Fiat Bravo
Fiat Palio
Fiat Punto
Fiat Stilo
Ford Fiesta
Ford Focus
Honda Civic
Honda Jazz
Hyundai Getz
Kia Picanto
Kia Rio
Mazda 2
Nissan Micra
Nissan Tiida
OPC
Opel Astra
Opel Corsa
Peugeot 207
Peugeot 308
Proton Savvy
Renault Clio
Renault Megane
Renault Sandero
Seat Altea
Seat Leon
Subaru Impreza
Suzuki Grand Vitara
Suzuki Swift
Toyota Conquest
Toyota RunX
Toyota Yaris
VW Golf
VW Polo

At this point I think I’m leaning towards the Suzuki Swift, the Nissan Tiida, the Ford Fiesta and the Chery Tiggo. They’re relatively affordable, and I think they’re nice looking…
And then I had a quick look at HelloPeter.com, and it says there that Suzuki and Nissan are companies that respond- with Suzuki having a 54% “good” ranking and Nissan only a 29% “good” ranking. Ford and Chery don’t feature much, and the instances I found were mostly complaints… but their not being there I take as a good sign.
Watch this space for the announcement of my acquisition!!!

…come play on my rollercoaster…

  1. I wish I could get a new car! I want a four door for when I FINALLY have a baby. Corsa will be hell on my back with a car seat!

  2. I have a ford fiesta and I love it! Its a lovely ize and great drive. I do like the Alfa though 🙂

  3. Thanx for all the ideas and feedback allbunnies! I’m shortening my list as we speak!

  4. Aaah good, you have a list. You know what this calls for? A load of test drives! 🙂

  5. Audi A3 Audi A3 Audi A3 Audi A3 Audi A3 Audi A3 Audi A3 Audi A3 Audi A3 Audi A3 Audi A3 Audi A3 Audi A3 Audi A3 Audi A3 Audi A3 Audi A3 would swap my first born, her spawn, husband, his liver – anything, but anything for an Audi A3, 3.2 with DSG – but 2 door – any any colour – please buy me one too (have a Jazz – reliable, economical – good buy but NOT a Audi A30

  6. That’s quite a nice list missy!

Now as a getz owner, I will tell you they don’t let you down – but they are pretty gay when you look at some of the other cars on that list of yours 😉 Like the Ford Focus (ST) – deelish

  7. I would personally go for the Audi or the VW golf. Both are such reliable cars! My VW golf (Honey was her name) was amazing. I got into an accident and she was barely scratched. The other car (Renault) was completely squashed and written off. xx

ps: It was the other driver’s fault. He wasn’t looking.

  8. That is so exciting – I quite like the Tiggo and can picture you in it….but Nissan is good too – Down here in Aus it is a very popular car and so is the Holden (Opel). Have fun deciding, can’t wait to see what you pick! Love ya
    MWA
    Gen

  9. Seat are no longer selling in SA on a large scale, Renault are CRAP at servicing (I worked for them briefly) and Chevy is v expensive to maintain.
Ford is cool, and Nissan got really good synovate results- best sales and aftersales.
    Buy me one, too?

  10. I don’t know whether this is important but when I have tried to insure clients new Chery’s insurers make sort of grumbling noises or flat refuse to insure them – but don’t explain why.

  11. Hello!

I read when I can, and respond when I:
    1) Have time and
    2) Have something to say.

I have a FIAT Panda and love love love it! It is small but cute, quirky and funky. I’ve had mine for nearly 3 years now and it took 2.5 years to even need a single pint of oil! I got it as a demo with 2 400km on the clock.

The electronic ‘city’ steering ROCKS, unlike the Kia Piccanto which needs serious elbow grease to manoeuvre, the Panda takes a pinky finger – seriously! It is VERY light on fuel – I can get an average of 5.4l/100 over an entire tank if I am careful! WOW.

Anyway good luck with the car hunting! 🙂

  12. Buying a new car is *lovely*.
Nothing compares to the thrill of getting behind the wheel and that new car smell hits you in the face…love it! I very nearly went for a Ford Fiesta when I bought my new car, but then got such a good deal on the RunX that I couldn’t refuse.

  13. I find buying a new car so exciting and I agree, I love brand new cars out of the box myself…
My Honda Jazz was my first every baby I bought myself and loved that car to bits, was very sad to see her go when I moved to Germany, here I got a brand new C2 – its cute but has NO power when I want to over take the trucks on the roads…so not enjoying her.

So we looking at cars as well…I love the look of the Ford Fiesta…she is a good looking babe that one..Hubby is more keen on me getting a Polo GTI which only comes out next year January…so have decided to wait and see what she looks like as the photo’s of her she looks a cheeky one.
So good luck and cant wait to hear what you decided on.

  14. Enjoy the car hunting. It sometimes can be a hassle but it’s all worth it.

  15. I have just bought a brand new mini cooper and am SO in love!!!
    Happy hunting!!

  16. Yay 🙂 And shoo, but your list is long! I had trouble just choosing between about 4 when I got my new car. But for me it was the test driving that clinched the deal – the car at the top of my list at the time (Renault Clio) was an awful driving experience. Good luck and have fun 🙂 Am definitely a little bit jealous! If I got a new car right now, the first thing I’d be test driving would be the Suzuki SX4.
